With the end of warmer weather here in Florida, comes the kick-off of the TRUE rodeo season. I know as a fellow equestrian that summers in Florida I tend to take the sweltering hot months off with maybe an occasional show here and there just to keep my horses in shape. (With having 3 bay/black horses sun is attracted to them) So when October rolls around that means back to competing 2-3, and sometimes 4, weekends a month. Since most of the time I am shooting the shows I am competing in cooler weather makes it a little more manageable so I'm not sweating my rear off. Up until this past month I also didn't have a lens that would take better photos during the night shows. I just invested in one for overall use and I am beyond excited to start using it and getting used to it. You see, during those hot months when it gets lighter later and it is hot until easily 8:00 PM shows tend to be at night during summer which put a huge, damp blanket over-top my photography business... Until now!

Before I purchased my new lens I attempted to use my existing lens to get some photos at the first Pierson Saddle Club show of their 2019/2020 season. I was able to get up to 50 riders until I started not really liking the quality of photos. It was definitely a huge step out of my comfort zone but I needed to try and build my experience to become a better photographer.

Jordan Fleming & Sunshine

I feel the most comfortable shooting just before dark with the main lens that I use because once I get home and get the photos uploaded I really don't have to edit the photos and love the quality of them.

McKinley Cowart & Bandit

But once the sun started to fade at this show I was really out of my comfort zone but knew I needed to at least try. So, I took for as long as I was able to get a somewhat clear photo. Since I have invested in the new lens, the photos should be much better and I look forward to getting use to it and working with it more.

I had planned to attend a show last Friday in Bunnell, but due to the weather I did not want to chance getting rained on (thanks Tropical Storm Nestor), just to work with my new lens. This week I plan on attending the MC Arena show on Friday October 25th just to get some time using it and as a backup I plan to go to Palatka, FL to their jackpot that Friday if I can't get to MC.

My lovely aunt Jeannie & Uncle Jimmy

Long story short, I look forward to getting to use my new lens more often. I was able to use my aunt and uncle as Guinea pigs this weekend as they were headed out to her High School reunion dinner and I must say I am extremely excited to get more pictures with this lens. So make sure to stay tuned to see where I will be headed (it's hard sometimes since there are so many other photographers in this area and out of respect I don't like to shoot with others that plan to attend shows). And don't forget! Just because I do a lot of horse shows doesn't mean that I don't do private shoots. Contact me today to find out pricing on individual shoots and more!
